Secondary School

At the Secondary School, students follow a curriculum approved by the Czech Ministry of Education. Foreign students follow a programme designed to meet the requirements of their home school or country.

The school currently offers courses preparing students for the IGCSEs, SAT, GED and IELTS. It is our aim to be an authorized International Baccalaureate World School in the future.

General Information

The 1st International School of Ostrava is among a select group of schools in the Czech Republic granted permission by the Czech Ministry of Education to provide English language teaching in a variety of subjects.

Which educational programme does the 1st International School of Ostrava follow?

  • The 1st International School of Ostrava is registered within the Network of Czech Schools, and as such, works with the curriculum established by the Czech Ministry of Education. As the school grows, we hope to introduce other international curricula to our students, such as the International Baccalaureate, the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education), as well as preparing our students for SAT, and IELTS.

  • Our students will graduate with the Czech leaving exam, called the "Maturita", and have the option of completing the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) examination offered by the British Council.

  • Foreign students who do not qualify for the Czech Leaving Examination have the possibility of completing the American-based GED (General Education Development) high-school diploma.

How do I register my child at the International School of Ostrava Secondary School?

  • If your child is currently enrolled in grade 5 or 9 of a Czech primary school, he or she can pick up an application form from their academic advisor and hand it in to their current school director.

  • If your child is currently enrolled in grade 9 of a lower Czech gymnasium, or grade 1 or 2 at a higher Czech gymnasium, he or she can simply transfer to the 1st International School of Ostrava after having successfully completed the English language entrance examination. Contact Secondary School Director Jan Petrus petrus@is-ostrava.cz for more information.

  • If your child is currently studying at a school outside of the Czech Republic, please contact Executive Director Brett Gray brett@is-ostrava.cz to help determine the individual program that best meets the specific needs of your child.

What does the entrance exam consist of?

For students coming into the Secondary School from Czech primary schools, the entrance examination consist of:

  • SCIO test in Czech,

  • SCIO test in General knowledge,

  • Oral and written English placement test.

  • Students with an average of 1.20 or better for all of grade 8 and the first half of grade 9 need not take the SCIO tests from Czech Language and General Knowledge.

  • For students coming from abroad, the school provides placement tests in English and mathematics. Consultation with the student's home school will be made in order to determine what the student will need to seamlessly integrate upon return from the Czech Republic.

Is my child really able to make the transition from having English grammar a few times a week at primary school to studying and thinking in English at the International Secondary School?

  • For the majority of our students, English is a second or third language. The School was created with this in mind, and actively helps students to catch up quickly with their language skills. The School holds a Summer Fun Camp for several weeks before Year 1 begins, in order to help students assimilate and get on track.

How many students are there per class?

  • There are a maximum of 16 students per group.
