ON THE ROAD TO KRAKOW | 2009-12-07
On a beautiful spring morning in April, 28 students from Grades 9 through 12 and three teachers boarded a bus and set off to Krakow for two days. The adventure began almost immediately as our bus driver had to manoeuver our coach out of the narrow street in front of the school. Our first stop when we reached Krakow was Wawel Castle. This is a remarkable sight and it includes the Wawel Cathedral, where many of Poland’s rulers are buried. Surprisingly, it was the teachers who were late for the meeting time! There was just so much to see! We also had some time to explore the central market square (the largest in Central Europe) and the surrounding area. We finished our day with a walk through the old Jewish section of the city. After a restful night at our hotel, we headed off early the next morning to visit the Wieliczka Salt Mines. We descended 136 metres below the surface of the earth and learned all about salt mining and its importance to the area and Poland. After lunch we climbed back on our coach and headed off to visit Auschwitz. We had a wonderful guide who provided us with a lot of background information and helped us to understand a bit of what went on there during WWII. After a full day of exploring Poland, it was a quiet ride back to Ostrava. Kateřina Hájková says, “The castle was really beautiful and Aschwitz was sad and depressing, but it is an important part of our history.” A big thank you to Mr. Corkill for organizing this wonderful trip!
