Earth Day | 2009-12-07
Students and teachers in the Upper School celebrated Earth Day twice this year. Not only was the day observed as usual on April 22, but then, the following Monday, students and teachers held a special all-day Earth-centered event. Štěpán Ochodek, Grade 11B’s Vice-President and Student Council Representative, was the main organizer, with Mr. Vlček and Mrs. Vozňaková as fakulty organizers.
Mathias Wingaa, Grade 6 Class President and Student Council Representative, organized a bottle-cap collection contest to highlight the amount of plastic we use in our everyday lives. Winners of the contest, Grade 11A, will get to choose an animal to sponsor at the Ostrava Zoo.
Students also participated by hosting and visiting booths highlighting different aspects of our interaction with the natural world. Some of the topics displayed included booths on oil spills, organic food, and whale hunting. Class 10A won recognition for its super classroom decoration, which included a giant handmade globe. The Students’ Choice Award went to Prima for its booth on human health, with Dr Ondrušová as resident expert.
When asked how he thought the day went, Mathias Wingaa replied, “It was great! I really learned a lot about the earth and I never want to eat KFC again!”
The day was a great success and we would like to thank all the organizers for their wonderful work! Next year will only be bigger and better.
