AFRICA - WILD AT HEART EXHIBITION | 2009-12-07
On Friday November 7 the students of Grade 11 visited a photography exhibition called “Wild at Heart“ which took place at the Silesian Ostrava Castle. The exhibition was organized by the Czech branch of The National Geographic Society. In addition to photographs of Africa, the exhibit included examples of traditional African arts and crafts as well as a projection of a documentary film. At the time of their visit students in Grade 11 were studying Africa so the exhibition was a perfect match to their studies. The exhibit allowed students to see detailed photographs of the wild character of the African continent. The set of photos showed the full spectrum of life in Africa. In addition to classic nature photos of elephants and hyenas, the exhibit included photos of African people. The nature photos showed the real and sometimes cruel character of African ecosystems, while the photos of the people clearly depicted aboriginal life and culture. The exhibition showed students that Africa is a place of contrast: a continent that is rich in both culture and natural beauty.
The exhibition was also visited at a later date by the students of Grade 6 and 7. It was particularly relevant for Grade 7 as they are undergoing a new project about Africa at the moment.
