REMEMBERING NOVEMBER 17TH, 1989 | 2010-01-07
On November 17th, 2009, the Czech Republic celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. As part of the commemoration of this occasion, our school hosted a known and respected history teacher from Gymnazium Olgy Havlove, Mr. Petr Šimíček, to talk about his memories as well as to familiarize us with the historical context of the events in November of 1989.
On November 4th, Mr. Šimíček started his presentation back in the Spring of 1968 and ended it in November of 1989. He explained the causes and effects of the Prague Spring, why it resulted in Normalization and how it led to the Velvet Revolution. As an active student of the time, he gave an entertaining and engaging description of the propaganda, fear, hope and courage of the period. Mr. Šimíček left us with a lot to think about, in terms of how important democracy is and how we should always learn from our past in order to avoid witnessing history repeat itself.
