LET THE WORLD COME TO YOU | 2010-01-12

On Wednesday, 25th of February, our secondary school hosted its first ever city-wide English competition called Let the World Come to You.

The competition was part of the Ostrava City government program “Learn English!” This program is designed to encourage increased interest in studying English by young students in our city. Our school’s English competition was selected to be a part of this program.

Invitations were sent earlier in the month to all the Primary Schools in the city of Ostrava. The primary schools which expressed an interest in our competition were then visited by pairs of our Grade 12 and 13 students who gave a model presentation to the Grade 9 primary English classes in those schools.

The main task of the competition was for one clever Grade 9 student from each school and two classmates to design a 10-15 minute presentation about their school and about a country of their choice. The whole presentation should be made using English. They were given about two weeks to prepare and could enlist the help of one of their English teachers.

So, at 8.15 am in the Hall of the Free Time Centre, 10 teams representing ten different Ostrava primary schools were wished good luck by Deputy Mayor of Ostrava Lubomir Pospíšil as the competition was declared open.

There was a panel of eight judges made up of English teachers from various primary schools. They were assessing the presentations according to content, style, technique and level of English. The scores for each presentation were tallied and here are the results of the winners:

1st place: ZŠ a MŠ Mitušova 8, Ostrava-Hrabůvka (France)
2nd place: ZŠ Matiční 5, Moravská Ostrava (Belgium)
3rd place: ZŠ A MŠ Mitušova 16, Ostrava-Hrabůvka (Spain)

Congratulations to the Mitušova 8 team which earned as their main prize free places at our Summer Fun Camp in Velke Karlovice in August 2009. The winners were kindly presented with their awards by Mr. Lukáš Ženatý, Vice Mayor of Ostrava.

Thanks go to all the schools which competed. I believe it was a very worthwhile experience for all the primary students and their teachers as this was the first competition of its kind in this city. Thanks also go to the main organizers of the competition – Mr. Petrus, Ms. Dobešová, Ms. Paličková and Gitana. Last but not least, thanks to the Grade 13 and 12 students without whose help this competition would not have been possible.

Hopefully, this will be the first of many successful competitions held by 1st ISO. Looking forward to next year.

Philip Corkill
Head Judge
